Worth It

It’s not so much being here. Not the beige walls or the beige chairs. The steel tables, doors, and beds. It’s not so much having your dignity robbed by having to shower with eleven other women. It’s not so much the degrading way the officers speak to you. Or the food they feed you that is impossible to fill up on. It’s not so much being cold all the time, that’s bothering. It’s not so much not being able to see the sky or a tree. It’s not all the crazy people, it is Key West, ha ha. It’s not all the noise or the whining or the crying.  All of these added together don’t amount to the sound of that little voice…. That keeps asking, quietly…. “Was it worth it?”

  2. Oh, how very well said. Physical discomfort and degradation are most horrible for real, but the thing that always brings me to my knees is that little voice…
